Every Monday night from the beginning of October until the end of November, a group of GEM missionaries is holding a conversational English meeting in a church in Müllheim, Germany. This coming week, they hope to have 23 Germans attend. This is the second time they’ve offered this to the community and the first time, it was a great success. The premise is to offer a casual atmosphere for non-native English speakers to come and simply converse with native English speakers. This approach is extremely successful for bridging the gap between churches and their communities. Whenever we tell people that Thadd is an English teacher, the reaction we get most often is “I want to learn English (or I want to speak better, etc)” and the follow-up response is “Would you tutor me (or do you know where I could go)?” Now, if we had an English Evening such as this in our community, we could hand them a flyer and encourage them to come. This is exactly what we have in the works. Thadd has met with the Pastor from our church, Stadtmission, and a few other key people to discuss how we might replicate English Evenings in Lörrach. We hope to start something in the Spring. This coming Monday, November 2, Thadd will go to Müllheim (45 minutes north from here) to be a part of the English Evening there in hopes of getting some ideas for what we might do here and to have some fun while he’s at it. Thadd loves socializing in this capacity and he’s excited to meet some new people. Our hope is that English can draw people into the church and show them a church that is radically different than the one they have in their minds because of the transforming love of Christ.

Please pray for:

Thadd and the other missionaries to be the fragrance of Christ to those that attend the November 2 English Evening

The English Evenings as they take place in Müllheim

Preparations for English Evenings to start at our church in the Spring

So we thought it was time to write about church once again. This time, we have great news! Last week, about 30 minutes before we were going to leave for church, I said to Thadd “Let’s try out the last church we haven’t visited yet” and Thadd said “Okay”. So we went. The moment we stepped foot in the door, we really felt a peace about the church. The people were so friendly and we could tell had the joy of the Lord in their souls. Many people said “hi” and were patient with our German (aka, they didn’t start talking English to us right away…) and the church itself had a very comfortable, family feel to it. There are also a lot of teachers from the German Christian school in this city and a lot of younger families. We’ve also found a few small groups during the week to visit and seem to be plugging into this church much faster than others. We really feel God has lead us to this church at the right time. Any sooner, and we may not have been ready…

We went again this morning and again felt that peace about the church. We visited the second service this morning which had more people, but the same friendly feel. Next week, the church meets in a different building that is located in a shopping center. They do this once a month in an effort to provide more exposure (it’s a more public meeting place) and to have members invite their unchurched friends (there’s more seating room). We are impressed with their outward focus in their community and it seems that many people that go to the church live and work in the city which has not been true of the other churches (many people from neighboring villages).

At any rate, we think we’re there to stay. Thank you for your prayers. Continue to pray as we seek out a small group and ways that we can serve this church. We’re trying to connect with people in the community that may be able to use us for volunteer work. We’re hoping to expand our German through this endeavor. I can’t tell you how relieving it is to have found a church!
