“Let the Nations be Glad!” by John Piper

This isn’t the first book on missions I’ve read, but I think I could be satisfied if it were the last. John Piper seems to have a gift for aiming for his readers’ heart and I feel more empowered and eager than ever before, and for the right reasons. I am sure you’ve all heard the first line from the book, but it is worth quoting again, as it redirects our heart to the goal of missions. Piper begins by firmly stating “Missions is not the ultimate goal of the church. Worship is. Missions exists because worship doesn’t.”

And of course there are many more quotes that I’ve enjoyed and considered for this entry, but just thought to leave the main thrust of Piper’s point as a summary of what is now a significant piece of my worldview of missions. It seems Piper spends so much time focussing on the who and what of missions, namely who God is and what Christ has accomplished, that the how seems to flow more forcelessly. So read it, enjoy God and spread the word…

I just read that book a couple of months ago, too. It has been a huge encouragement to remember that we’re here as an act of worship and to “win” more worship for a God who deserves it so much (and for the joy of people I care about!).
