Stadtmission (City Mission): Church Update

So we thought it was time to write about church once again.  This time, we have great news!  Last week, about 30 minutes before we were going to leave for church, I said to Thadd “Let’s try out the last church we haven’t visited yet” and Thadd said “Okay”.  So we went.  The moment we stepped foot in the door, we really felt a peace about the church.  The people were so friendly and we could tell had the joy of the Lord in their souls.  Many people said “hi” and were patient with our German (aka, they didn’t start talking English to us right away…) and the church itself had a very comfortable, family feel to it.  There are also a lot of teachers from the German Christian school in this city and a lot of younger families.  We’ve also found a few small groups during the week to visit and seem to be plugging into this church much faster than others.  We really feel God has lead us to this church at the right time.  Any sooner, and we may not have been ready…

We went again this morning and again felt that peace about the church.  We visited the second service this morning which had more people, but the same friendly feel.  Next week, the church meets in a different building that is located in a shopping center.  They do this once a month in an effort to provide more exposure (it’s a more public meeting place) and to have members invite their unchurched friends (there’s more seating room).  We are impressed with their outward focus in their community and it seems that many people that go to the church live and work in the city which has not been true of the other churches (many people from neighboring villages).

At any rate, we think we’re there to stay.  Thank you for your prayers.  Continue to pray as we seek out a small group and ways that we can serve this church.  We’re trying to connect with people in the community that may be able to use us for volunteer work.  We’re hoping to expand our German through this endeavor.  I can’t tell you how relieving it is to have found a church!

Yes, it is great to hear of a church that really is seeking to live the Great Commission here in Germany. We met with the pastor of the church yesterday and we found out some really great things about the church and it’s history. I will write more later regarding this as we want to do more research into it (the conversation was all in German so we understand the basics, but wanted to go deeper and find out more).

I was wondering what was happening regarding this prayer request. It seemed like you have been seeking for awhile. So glad that the Lord finally directed you to a place that feels like “home” where you feel you can use your gifts and talents and practice German.

Recently I pulled out a book I had on hymns abd their history, who wrote them.. I picked ones I knew and was so surprised to see the authors were German! ( Praise to the Lord Almighty, Now We Thank our God) And also recently read a bio on BACH and an article on Mendelsson, both German. Germany has such a rich spiritual history. It is good to see and hear there are still faithful witnesses to the truth.
