Things about living in a foreign country….
Perhaps the great “thing” I’ve noticed that is different about living over here is the lack of options. I truly never realized what America had to offer – you can get whatever you want, whenever you want, and for whatever price you want (within reason, of course). We’re doing cloth diapers and I’ve found Germany’s selection to be quite limiting (I couldn’t get Aplix Velcro for the diapers I’m sewing, I couldn’t buy the waterproof colors that I wanted, I can’t find various materials at a reasonable price, etc). There have been numerous times where I’ve found something in American and I wanted to get it here, but to ship from America is ridiculous, so I go about on my search to find it locally or from a German website. First, I have to try to translate whatever product I’m looking at (this can take considerable time as many times, I don’t even know the word in English). Second, I have to do extensive searches to find it. Third, I have to deal with the disappointment of not finding it. This all takes a lot of time and effort. This is why we depend so wholeheartedly on friends to guide us to where we can find things. I’m ever so grateful to all those who have been asked “what is this called in German?” and “where can I find it?”. AND last, but not least, we are EVER so grateful for ALL of you who have toted something across the ocean for us. I guess, I wish we didn’t know what we were missing….
[DISCLAIMER: This is in no way complaining. We are so very grateful that we live in Germany (we love it here) and that God has called us to our work here. We realize we have it much better than many others and not being able to "buy" something is not really all that much of an inconvenience - it saves us a lot of money
I just thought I'd share some thoughts regarding life here. Please take it with a grain of salt.]
